With all the best will in the world, things go “bang” before we realise- especially with multi tasking triathletes.
These awesome Lifeproof device cases have saved my a** more than once.
Whether your phone slips out of your cycling jersey on a bump in the road or comes too close to a swimming pool (it is waterproof). Approved uses for the case include:
1) placing your phone on the pool deck to follow a workout,
2) hooking up some bluetooth headphones and using your phone as a music player while running, or
3) popping it in a bike jersey pocket where it’s guaranteed to stay sweat-free or using the optional bike mount to turn your phone into a bike computer.
Giro Bravo Cycling Gloves$13-$35
We ALWAYS need new cycling gloves. These are an item that frequently needs replacing.
Then you need summer gloves and winter gloves depending on where you live.
There are some popular brands that have worked well for us that do not break the bank
These gloves have a premium feel, for a reasonable price. They have a breathable mesh and a 4- way stretch. Engineered with three-panel design with New AX Suede synthetic leather and a sonic-welded pull tab, they are moisture wicking, long lasting, ergonomic and have extra optimized padding in just the right spots.
These cycling gloves have awesome insulation that provides optimal warmth without being too bulky. They also have a padded palm that enables you to have superior riding comfort. Another important feature that these gloves have is hook up and closure that allows you to put them on and off with ease
These cycling gloves feature a thick gel padding on the palms that has been pre-shaped in order to provide a comfortable fit even when you are out for long rides. They also have hook up closures that allows you to put them on and take them off easily. If your hands usually become sore during long rides, these gloves will be very suitable for you. Road vibration is significantly cut down by the gel palm.
Water bottles always need replacing and are an easy gift idea for a kind relative that does not want to spend too much.
How about an insulated water bottle?
On super hot days your cool drink goes lukewarm very quickly and tastes disgusting. But on freezing cold days when you are struggling to stay warm, it is tough to sip regularly on ice cold fluids.. These insulated water bottles- keep hot drinks hot and cool drinks cool for up to 4 hours!
The problem can be that as the insulation makes the water bottle thicker, it is usually difficult to get it in and out of the cage
Luckily this one passed our scrutiny with flying colors:
With 1211 x 4.5 star reviews on Amazon, it is easy to see why.
This slick-looking insulated bottle was a clear winner for us, being easy to access from our bottle cage and using the simple yet effective regular cycling bottle style lid. All this meant we felt there was little difference between this, in look and design, to a regular bottle making using it feel completely normal. The thermal wrap technology uses for this bottle worked a treat and keep our drinks at a good temperature during ride lengths of several hours.
If you have booked a 70.3 or Ironman you will need to upgrade your hydration system. Check out this awesome aero water bottle system. Not expensive either!
The XLAB TORPEDO SYSTEM is the cutting-edge of aerodynamics, combined with ultralight design and state-of-the-art ergonomics. Passionately developed over a four-year period with Ironman World Champions, Aerospace Engineering, CFD Analysis and the experience from 24 World Triathlon Titles. The XLAB Torpedo System 100 comes in Red or Magenta, with a Composite VEE Cage & Alloy Mount.
One of the most irritating things in life is leaky swim goggles. Make sure yours work- if not- replace them immediately. These goggles are polarised as well so perfect for outdoor events when the sun is very bright. You need to be able to see the buoys and other swimmers clearly in an open water race.
These goggles ensures the best fit for most facial structure types and easy adjustment of the strap even during swimming. They also feature liquid silicone eye cups to achieve optimal level of suction without applying excessive pressure around the eyes. I used to look like a panda for 3 hours after swimming as my previous goggles had to be so tight to stop leaks. I wish I had found these sooner!
Now don’t get me wrong, I am not talking about ghastly Homer Simpson socks. No way! Cyclists are very proud of their outfits and it is possible to inject some style and class without going too far! Equally plain white boring socks are totally unacceptable… as are faded white, slightly greying socks!
Socks can really set you apart. You can never have too many socks. Rule: Never wear boring socks!
Great gift to suggest for grandma or auntie!
Check these out:
If you prefer a little less patterns in your pedalling, these socks are the most comfortable item to ever encase a human foot. Made of thick Merino wool with a four-inch cuff, they’re perfect on chilly days and seem to last forever.
These little beauties are many runners secret weapon. They prevent injury, sore calves and shin splints.
These compression socks are extremely comfortable, lightweight, moisture wicking and thermal regulating. There is extra support at your arches for added comfort and to prevent fatigue. These are the best compression socks you will ever try (and I have tried a lot!)
Graduated Compression means that there is the most compression in the ankle area and less in the calf area. This helps to promote resolution of lactic acid after hard workouts and pump blood back to the heart through the veins. This prevents swelling and improves muscle recovery time. You can use while running or like I do wear them after a run while relaxing. Sometimes I even wear them at work under my trousers- no one suspects a thing but my legs feel fresh to run again the next day :)
Running hats also need replacing at least every year. This one I discovered this year and I love it. Great fit, terry sweatband for super fast moisture wicking with a black undervisor to reduce glare. Genius!
Also it is machine washable and does not shrink
Get some funky, fun cycling jerseys to keep training interesting. Whether its your favourite Tour de France team jersey or something slightly different, make sure you look the part!
These jerseys have direct-vent panels and full length zipper for ventilation. They use breathable material, and professional fitting design.
Grab some easy reading when you are recovering from your latest training session:
Of course, we will point you in the direction of Dan and Charlotte’s books but there are many great training books and biographies to keep you inspired.
Ultimate Triathlon Gift Ideas $100-$500
Moving up into more generous family members ☺
Giro Advantage 2 Road Bike Helmet $55-$150
The natural choice for triathletes and time triallists when you are ready to knock some valuable seconds off your cycling time.
With more than a decade of wind tunnel testing and a list of victories from the Olympics to Ironman to the Tour de France, Giro has proven time and again to be at the pinnacle of aerodynamic performance. And with deeply channeled ventilation and a fully adjustable fit system, it’s cool and comfortable enough to go the distance.
It is a rare treat to find a watch that records swim distance pace stroke count and pool lengths. This watch revolutionized my swim training. You can upload your data to Garmin Connect to analyze as you would expect. The watch offer advanced features for timed sets and logging drills.
The amount of cycling you will be doing means you are always grateful for high quality cycling shorts. CW-X produce high-performance technical apparel that help triathletes improve their speed, endurance and recovery. Pro Short provides an optimal blend of body comfort, by using COOLMAX fabric and muscle support with the webbed compression fabric (Support Web). The Support Web also provides lower back and hip support together with quad and hamstring stabilization. This translates to more power and less fatigue.
Using construction that mimics kinesio tape to provide support to the lower back, quads, hips, and hamstrings, these tight shorts also compress for circulation and recovery.
Try them- you will notice a difference!
A great brand name in this space. Skins developed the world’s first dynamic gradient compression running tights which delivers more oxygen-filled blood to active muscles, increasing endurance, power, and efficiency
They include adaptive HEIQ technology for state-of-the-art temperature and moisture management
Flat bonded/taped hems and flat sitting, flexible, chafe resistant A-Seam
Specifically placed memory MX panels offer maximum support to key muscle groups and help reduce it band friction syndrome (ITBFS)
Lazer Z1 MIPS Helmet $310
What about a new helmet? Not just extremely functional but also stylish! Lazer’s popular flagship Z1 helmet is now offered with MIPS technology for 2016. MIPS—Multi-directional Impact Protection System—is designed to reduce rotational forces on the brain that result from angled impacts to the head. The Z1 MIPS retains all of the standard version’s features, such as 31 airy vents and a Rollsys retention system, and is still lightweight. A wide variety of accessories is offered for the Z1 MIPS including a lock, cooling pad, tail light, and LifeBEAM heart rate monitor; but our favorite this time of year is the aero cover. This plastic cover snaps on, limiting airflow for extra warmth, but offers just enough ventilation to keep from getting sweaty. When paired with a headband, the aero cover just might be the ultimate winter protection for your head.
Remember it only takes one fall to realise how important your helmet is. Also remember if you do crash- replace your helmet immediately even if you cannot see any cracks!
Bollé The One $105-$210
Bollé’s entrance into the helmet market may come as a surprise to some, but the eyewear maker has been producing snow sports helmets for years, so it’s not a huge leap. The Bollé One is designed to adapt to different conditions via a modular system. Detachable airfoils boost aerodynamics for racing or increase warmth for winter riding. Interchangeable liners offer even more cold weather protection. You can add a visor or a taillight mount to make The One commuter friendly. Strategically shaped and placed forward vents play nice with eyewear for easy storage on sweaty climbs.
Aero bars make a huge difference to improving your cycling speed via reduced wind resistance plus the forward position on the bike allows you to generate more power. Click here to read more about aerobars.
Bibshorts are one of the best items of clothing for both comfort and aerodynamics. These Endura bibshors are super popular for good reason: An almost tailored feel, multi-thickness and great panel design
The FS260 sit right at the top of the performance tables. At first glance the pad looks pretty simple, but that’s partly down to the way it’s attached to the crotch. Inverted, the flat face (that would normally be against the fabric) folded less than standard oriented pads in other shorts. It’s a multi-thickness, supportive elasticated pad, but these details are hidden.
What is visible is the wide gripper bands and great panel design that fits the crouched cycling position so well. They also are UV-protective as well for those hot days on the saddle.
For women bib-shorts can be problematic for those awkward toilet stops. Make sure you go for styles with drop-tail design. These shorts are super comfortable, convenient and a performance enhancer.
Castelli Free Aero Bib Shorts – Women’s $120-$200
Another great options for the girls, these Castelli bib shorts are extremely popular and well tested. Lightweight and breathable, comfortable against sweaty skin and a generously thick pad
A triathlon specific wetsuit makes a huge difference to your ease of swimming in open water. Never make the mistake of buying an ordinary wetsuit for surfing. HUUB have an excellent range 100% Neoprene, NBR-designed X-O skeleton for added buoyancy and efficient swimming
This is an ideal wetsuit with 3mm thick neoprene in the top half and 5mm in the legs. The added buoyancy maximizes height for hips and legs while swimming. There is a bicep release which allows for greater range of motion and efficient stroke; crossover alignment panel guides arm straight with the suit.
There is also a flexible calf release panel to relieve pressure to allow for freedom of movement and improved kicking, propulsion, and circulation
Some people will will 2 wetsuits- a warm long leg, long arm suit for colder weather and a short arm/short leg or even sleeveless for warmer water. Be clear on your goals before you buy so you get the most use out of it. The Volt is the ultimate triathlon wetsuit that is comfortable, durable, fast and affordable. Get maximum flexibility with 3:2mm neoprene construction. This model has an X-Flex wetsuit liner which stretches in all four directions and returns to its original structure to guarantee that the Volt will retain its shape and fit. Xterra has its own X-Slice coating to reduce drag to keep you fast in the water.
Plus Xterra even give you 30 days to take the wetsuit, try it on and test it out. You can even take it for a swim!
Fabulous! This works a treat as one of the ultimate triathlon gift ideas as you can return it for another size should you need to.
PEARL IZUMI TRI FLY IV $110-$180
Like great cycling socks- select great cycling shoes. The super-light (230 grams) Tri Fly IV sports a fabric mesh upper for extra ventilation and smooth inner construction so you can wear them in your race without socks. The best part? The large Velcro strap makes for easy on and off, saving you precious seconds in transition.
Garmin Edge 520 $265
Bike computers do not all have to be suer expensive. Garmin 520 is a great one that does most of the things you will need.
If you’re after a bike computer that’s geared towards performance, is does away with the ‘optional’ extras you’ll find on the top-end Edge 1000, that bump the price right up.
The Edge 520 is the first of Garmin’s computers to integrate with Strava segments, so if you like to unleash your competitive side during training then this one might be the computer for you.
Data is the name of the game as far as the Edge 520 is concerned and you’ve got a whole heap of metrics at your finger tips. Everything from the basics, like speed, distance, time, elevation and gradient, to a range of data pulled in from heart rate monitors and power meters. Your inner data geek will be kept happy!
It also offers the ability to work with ANT+ compatible, power-controlled indoor trainers. Simply set the wattage you want to hold and the 520 will adjust the trainer to make sure you’re holding that target wattage. Plus it’ll also offer more features when paired with a power meter like FTP tests, watts/kg tracking and even an estimation of VO2 max when coupled with a heart rate monitor.
Want to do everything like the Pros? IRONMAN world champion Mirinda Carfrae says it best: “Compex is a crucial part of my recovery. IRONMAN racing is demanding and I love that I can recover faster and more efficiently and get more out of my training every day.” The Compex Performance Muscle Stimulator comes highly recommended for athletes who engage in frequent competition—sound familiar? With five different programs, each including five levels of progression, the system helps athletes of all levels prevent injuries, ease pain, get stronger, and recover faster.

This is the best body composition monitor we have come across. This unique product gives individual body composition readings for each body segment: trunk, right arm, left arm, right leg and left leg. The BC-1500 is especially useful for anyone who is monitoring the balance of left and right side of body or trying to build or rehabilitate a particular part of one’s body. The BC-1500 uses eight electrodes, four innovative retractable handgrip electrodes, along with four standard feet electrodes.
Garmin Edge 1000 $500
Garmin’s Edge 1000 is still the unit to beat in the bike computer market if you’re after an all-singing GPS unit.
Some of the smarter features include incoming weather alerts that can warn you if the weather’s forecast to change mid-ride, call and text alerts from your phone, and the ability to use the inbuilt maps and GPS to suggest routes once you select the distance you want to ride.
All this comes from Bluetooth Smart, ANT+ and Wi-Fi connectivity meaning the 1000 can talk to both your smartphone and power meter/sensors. Add on top of that a huge range of data fields and metrics, and there’s not much the Edge 1000 can’t do.
The larger screen makes navigation using the preloaded Garmin Cycle Maps even easier, and mapping includes what Garmin call ‘points of interest’ as well as the ability to navigate turn-by-turn.
Outside of the main functionality, the Edge 1000 also includes a few interesting little extras. One of these is the ability of the device to function in either portrait or landscape modes, something that doesn’t necessarily add functionality but it’s nice to have the choice. Another is LiveTrack. Basically, using the Edge 1000’s connectivity to your smartphone, you can let other people track your rides online in real time. Useful if you’re heading off into the wilderness
Ultimate Triathlon Gift Ideas >$1000
For those who REALLY love you….
Power meters are great once you have the basics mastered and need extra data. Working with power data is a whole new skill set. Jim Meyer developed the Quarq power meter when he was training full-time as a triathlete. He used his degree from MIT to build his own. His company is now owned by SRAM, so Quarq power meters have become a mainstay on SRAM’s gruppos. The lightweight Quarq power meter is part of the crank and utilizes 10 strain gauges to measure your power output, making it extremely accurate. Since it doesn’t come with a head unit, you can utilize any ANT+ compatible computer (or watch) to gather your power data. Awesome for getting lots of reliable and consistent power info.
Race Entry Fee (!)
These are not cheap and what an amazing gift.
There are just so many to choose from these days so I wont give you a specific link.
